"Syn City" - InfAR design studio SoSe 2017

NOMINATION: InfAR students shortlisted for waaward

The resilient approach of the INFRASTRUCTURE WALL by Loïc Bernet, Franziska Berthold and Athina Stefani convinced the Jury of the wettbewerbe aktuell student award  „wovon wir träumen“. The Winners of the 10 finalists will be announced in Frankfurt at the „light and building“ fair on march 14 2016.

As the starting point of an upgrading project in an informal neighbourhood of Addis Ababa the students proposed an urban-framing wall, which holds all the necessary infrastructure and serves as the backbone of self-made buildings.

The highly robust, incremental and user-led flexible approach encourages diversity and differentiation in housing by promoting traditional architecture and local materials and manufacturing. At the same time it allows the local municipalities to sympathetically control and participate in the rapid urban expansion of Ethiopias capital.

LECTURE: Urban Analyses for tall builings, 20.01.2016 at 18:00

The InfAR Lecture Series presents today, 18:00 - 19:00 in Room 105 (Main Building):
Klara Czynska, PhD architect, Pawel Rubinowicz, PhD architect, Adam Zwoliński, PhD architect,
from West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin
with three short presentations about:

REFUGERMANY! Arriving Architecture

Due to military conflicts and human catastrophies 60 million people are on the run, which is the highest number of migration since World War II.
Germany, led by its worshipped chancellor „Mama Merkel“, is the most desirable destination for most of the migrants heading to European countries. A seemingly unstoppable influx will lead 1 million refugees into Germany by the end of this year. Despite of a strong welcoming culture and a productive helpfullness within local societies, future-orientated strategies on all social, economic but strongly urban levels must be developed as soon as possible.
The seminar calls for conceptual strategies to meet the demand of integrating spaces, cultural demands and social involvement for the recently arrived. The goal will not be a temporary sheltering, but a shared long-lasting diametral social insertion of living habits and traditions between the new and the settled.

Final Review Master Design Studio

Tuesday, July 7 / 12:00 / Oberlichtsaal, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

Emerging countries in Asia, South America and Africa are facing the same phenomenon: a rural exodus leading to a rapidly growing urbanization and a sharp rise of informal settlements. The municipalities and planners of those new Megacities are meeting extreme challenges - but also gigantic opportunities. Which soft (governance, economic, cultural, social) and hard (transport, energy, water, waste, communication, green) infrastructure is indispensable to cover the basic needs of living and working in the beginning of the 21st century? How much can architectural systems and sustainable constructions tangibly improve and prime both urban planning and structural design? Which are the adequate infrastructural and building systems and materials to construct a sustainable city and interrelate with its complexities?

5. Kernmodul "Adaptable Structures in emerging Countries - Building Bahir Dar" | SoSe 2015

The semester design studio found its final destination in a bright and inspiring presentation performed by 15 students. The project´s wide area of strategies ranging from urban scale up to building systems and details brought all the complexity into foucus that emerging countries are facing now and in the near future. Followed by a mind-opening discussion with the members of the international jury the basics of the next semester´s research field were set:

Ethiopian cities are pressurized by the daily arriving inhabitants from their surrounding hinterlands. Focusing on the enablement of rural economic and cultural participation based on building methods will lead the student´s attention out of the megacities into Ethiopia´s countryside.

Application Call - Design Studio "Adaptable Structures for emerging Countries" | WS 14/15

"500 Housing Units for Addis Ababa"

The studio focuses on the development of innovative urban and housing typologies for residential district of Addis Ababa. The Project takes place parallel to Design Studio offered by the ETH Zürich, Chair Architecture and Construction (Prof. Dirk E. Hebel): “The city administration of Ethiopia’s capital commissioned the chair with this task. Already in 2015, these units for no- and low-income families, which are being displaced due to on-going redevelopment strategies, shall be constructed within the inner-city context based on the students’ design proposals.

The integral part of this project, following the tradition of previous projects is the excursion to Addis Ababa and 1:1 construction of housing prototype. The excursion is scheduled on 19.10. - 26.10.2014 and will be financially supprted by "Welcome to Africa" project funded by BMBF.
